Bill Maher is just being a copycat. And he's doing it for the ratings. What an attention and ratings whore. What a wanker.
Maher probably figured that if a lowly minority journalist could get so much publicity for saying something stupid, then he should be able to work that same angle and get even more publicity.
According to Salon.com reporter Justin Elliott, Maher said the following on his show:
Am I a racist to feel alarmed by that? Because I am. And it’s not because of the race, it’s because of the religion. I don’t have to apologize, do I, for not wanting the Western world to be taken over by Islam in 300 years? ... I should be alarmed, and I don't apologize for it.
Um, well Maher, I think technically you're being a bigot, but I'm sure that, given the opportunity, you would and could be an exemplary racist too.
Perhaps he's looking for Fox News to throw some cash his way too (Juan Williams made $2 mil for his bigoted comments). Or maybe this is all just a build up to the real ratings grabber when he does a mea culpa and apologizes for saying such a terrible thing.
We'll have to wait and see how the media and the public reacts to this stupid comment. I'm sure the Maher publicists/pr folks are eager to see which way this one is going to play.
Oooh! How exciting! Baiting Muslims for ratings!
UPDATE: 11/21/10
Oh my! Look at this wanker-response I received on this post:
I asked my mom and she said she didn't post this comment. Unfortunately the wanker didn't share his/her email so we can only hope the Wanker comes back so that he/she can see that we shared his/her wanker-comment!
