Yes, I am gloating.
American Muslims were as engaged as they have ever been. I think we've opened a new chapter in American Muslims' civic engagement. I saw it all over and even in my own family.
American Muslims were doing phone banks in Muslim-owned banquet halls and in homes across my congressional district (the IL 8th). My father and my uncle were volunteering for phone banks, working in campaign offices (including local candidate campaigns). My immediate family embraced political activism as the norm. Imams and Muslim organizations and well known Islamic scholars called voting a religious duty. Wow. Just wow!
On the eve of this election a nasty Hindutva movement tried to taint our diverse community by slinging Islamophobia in newspaper and tv ads supporting that nightmare known as Joe Walsh (lame duck thank God!), but even here American Muslims overcame!
I'm as optimistic as ever for the role American Muslims can make in America and in the world!
Imams and Islamic companies and well known Islamic college students known as voting a spiritual responsibility.
